Wait on QB, Dominate Your League!

There’s a theory about the great John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off—that Ferris isn’t real, just a figment of his best friend Camero
n’s imagination.
For 36 years, I’ve been Cameron. It’s time to be Ferris.

And just like the self-proclaimed Sausage King of Chicago, I want YOU McGregor-strutting into your draft like you own the place—because that’s the confidence you need, and that’s the confidence you deserve!
Whether you nailed your draft or fumbled the bag, once the playoffs start, everyone’s 0-0. Great roster construction puts you in the best spot to posterize the dumb-dumbs in your league for the next five months. And I’m here to tell you why waiting to draft a QB next season is the best move you can make to dominate.
Preface: All data based off stats from fantasydata.com consensus standard PPR scoring in 12-team leagues—because that’s the default format that most of us are playing in anyway.
In 2024 fantasy drafts, we saw studs like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Patrick Mahomes fly off the board within the first few rounds—most gone before the 5th, according to ADP. If every early-round QB delivered elite value, this wouldn’t even be an article…
But last draft season? A lot of y’all excitedly jumped onto fantasy landmines—like a skinny Steve Rogers before the serum.
THIS is your super serum!
Last season, Lamar led the pack with 430.4 points, followed closely by that glorious stallion of a man, Josh Allen, who still delivered a respectable 385.1 points and a solid return on investment.
Unfortunately, the other dumb-dumbs in your league started getting nervous, reaching for landmines like Anthony Richardson (163.4pts), Mr. Coleridge Bernard Stroud IV 220.4pts(O-H!), and Patrick Mahomes 283.4pts. Even I wasn’t immune—I begrudgingly fell victim to the mid-round temptations of Kyler Murray 297.2pts in multiple leagues. (I also doubled up on Jayden Daniels 355.8pts in those leagues)
The Reality Check:
Last season, 50% of the top 12 fantasy QBs were drafted outside the top 100 picks.
Let me say that again—half of the top 12 QBs were drafted after pick 100. That’s Round 9, Pick 4 in a 12-team draft!
And yet, I know some of you are still thinking, “But Lamar put up over 120 more points—I’m not giving that up.” And hey, to each their own. Lamar is a blast to have on your squad.
But here’s the thing—we play fantasy football week to week! Over 17 games, that “120-point advantage” from Lamar? It’s just 7.05 more points per game.
And because you burned early draft capital on an elite QB, that pick has to hit—there is no room for error.
Meanwhile, if you grabbed Brock Purdy (99th overall), you could also take a shot on another upside swing like Jayden Daniels (104th) or Baker Mayfield (166th). Now you’ve got flexibility, depth, and options at 6 different starting positions.
Where It Clicked for Me…
The cumulative impact of drafting higher-tier RBs and WRs far outweighs the slight edge of taking an elite QB early.
Simply put: 2+2+2+2+2 > 4
It’s elementary.
This game is easy—it really is. But just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s simple!
The Draft Day Lesson:
Drafting an early QB is like taking that Ferrari 250 GT California out for a joyride without knowing how to work the clutch—you’re flexing, but you’re about to crash and total your draft. Just go to the parade! Danke schön.
Now, don’t listen to what I’m not saying! I’m not telling you to only draft QBs after pick 100—that would be madness. “This. Is. Sparta!” (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.)
The real key? Have multiple targets in multiple rounds, know your price, and take advantage of draft values!
Look, I could give you stats from the last four years, break down offensive tendencies, and bore you with all the statistical blah blah blah—I enjoy it, and even I’m already bored.
Trust me—the evidence is there.
At the end of the day, go in with a plan. Have conviction in your decisions, and it will lead to a much happier fantasy season!
Now let’s go build us a league winner, baby!
